The definition of a wedding dress is simply a gown worn by a bride at her wedding. The type of wedding gown and color can vary depending on where you live. In America the most common colors are white or ivory. The white dress did not become popular until the 1840’s. Queen Victoria wore white when she married Albert of Saxe Coburg.
Now there are many different styles of wedding gowns. They are long and tea length dresses. Tea length dresses are usually for beach or destination weddings but since its your day you can wear one wherever you would like.
First decide which type of silhouette you want to wear. The choices are A-Line, Mermaid. Princess (also know as ball gown) and sheath. The sheath style is a slim form fitting gown that can be long or short. It has a defined waist also. An A- line gown is slimmer at top then has a gentle flair towards the bottom. A Ball Gown or Princess dress is one that is super fitted on top and goes in to a large flair or full skirt. The last silhouette is the mermaid style. The mermaid gown is fitted through the top and down across the hips. Once the gown hits the thighs or calves it flairs out. It has a very dramatic look.
Now it’s on to neck lines. The Bateau neckline is shaped like a boat and follows your collarbone. A popular wedding gown neckline is the halter neckline. It goes around the neck and fastens there. A common wedding neckline is the scoop neck. It’s a simple neckline that is round and low. A lot of wedding gowns are strapless. These are gowns that have no straps at all. Sweetheart Gowns will be low cut with two carved sides giving the neckline the appearance of a heart. You can also find drop waist gowns and gowns with full sleeves.
